What is noun by entiregrade

*A noun is naming word. All the given name to any living or non-living being for identification, they come under noun.

*A noun may be the name of a place, person, animal or thing.

To know the Noun clearly we have to know about its types.

There are 5 types of a noun are there, they are briefly described below:

  2. Common Noun
  3. Collective Noun
  4. Abstract Noun
  5. Material Noun / (Concrete Noun)

1. Proper Noun

The name of a particular person, place, animal or thing is called a proper noun.

The noun that is popular and particular are coming under proper noun.

Read the following sentences:

*Salman Khan is a Bollywood actor.

*Nepal is a beautiful country.

*The first animal sent to space was Laika.

*Kohinoor is the largest diamond in the world.

In the above sentences, italic words: Salman Khan, Nepal, Laika, Kohinoor are the examples of Proper Noun.

Some more examples of a proper noun are Mt. Everest, Burj Khalifa, Sun, Moon, Elon Mask, Asia, etc.


At the beginning of any proper noun, we can use article “The”.

If any noun has “The” article in beginning it is the proper noun in that sentence.

2. Common Noun

The noun that is commonly used for anyone of a particular property.

The noun that can be used for any member of a class.

Read the following sentences:

A cow is a national animal of Nepal.

Alex is a student.

A doctor has given me medicines.

Computer is an electronic Device.

Italic words: Cow, Student, Doctor, Computer are examples of Common Noun.


If any proper noun is written to show the quality of that person, then it is considered as a common noun.

Eg.       Laxmi Prashad Devkota is the Wordsworth of Nepal.

Rabindra Nath Tagore is the Shakespeare of India.

In some cases, if there is more than one person of that Proper noun, then it is a Common Noun.

Eg.       There are two Deepaks in this class.

3. Collective Noun

The Collective Noun is the name of a group of a particular property.

The nouns that denote to groups are called Collective Noun.

Read the following sentences:

My bunch of keys has been lost.

John was attacked by a swarm of bees.

He is looking after his folk of sheep.

Underlined words: Bunch, Swarm, Folk are examples of Collective Noun.

Some more examples of a collective noun are crowd, herd, troop, team, fleet, etc.

4. Abstract Noun

The Abstract Noun doesn’t refer to physical objects that can’t touch, see, hear, smell or taste but refers to ideas, conditions, qualities or feelings.

*An Abstract Noun is the name of a quality, action or state drawn off from the object it belongs to.

To clearly know about abstract noun read the following sentences:

He is very happy.

We are feeling sorrow.

You have the courage, to tell the truth.

Amir is in danger.

Underlined words: happy, sorrow, courage, truth, danger are the examples of Abstract Noun.

Some more examples of an abstract noun are: health, freedom, bravery, time, humour, mystery, etc.

5. Material Noun (Concrete Noun)

The term ‘material’ refers to substance or thing from which something else can be made, eg. iron ore, oil, timber, etc.

*A material noun denotes the matter or substance from which different things are made.

To clearly know about material noun read the following sentences:

They run a coffee shop.

She like a silver ring.

Today, I will eat fish.

Amir drinks milk.

Underlined words: coffee, silver, fish, milk are examples of Material Noun.

Some more examples of an abstract noun are: gold, iron, rice, fan, paper, plastic, etc.


Sometime Material Nouns used as Common noun but at the beginning of material noun article (a, an, the) are not use. So, if articles are used before any noun consider it as a common noun.
